This is so far the best afro I’ve seen all week courtesy of four year old aspiring dancer, Miles Brown. He’s already passed the Ellen Degeneres litmus Youtube test (Brown danced for her today on the show) so you know this kid is going places. I just can’t get over his white gloves, it kills me.

Hey Marc, I LOVE your afros; Afros dominate runway in Paris

Photo by Monica FeudiTo a delighted and albeit surprised (not to mention tardy) audience, Marc Jacobs debuted his ready-to-wear Louis Vuitton Spring 2010 collection in Paris this afternoon. According to WWD’s twitter page, Vogue editor Grace Coddington wooped in delight at the sight of the first afro making its way down the runway. But “wooping” doesn’t compare to the outright fits of excitement I made when the first images made their way online.

Inspired by “travelers – the movement that came after Punk,” Jacobs marched down a legend of models in glorious afro wigs along with an unexpected array of bold accessories including neon fur tails, denim satchels, adorned kitten heals and even a chic fanny pack or two.

The collection embraced a street-chic lifestyle with rich satchel bags and the lowest heels seen at any show at Paris Fashion Week so far. Jacobs identified the collection as, “Street clothes, embracing the hippie-cyber, tribal-punk world,” and I just call it the best creative display of talent embracing the Afro movement I have seen thus far; a breath of fresh air for those of us seeking to embrace a comfortable wardrobe while maintaining a fresh sense of adventure-seeking bravado. Bravo.

Photo courtesy of MAC cosmeticsAfro’s have been getting a lot of attention recently. Maybe you haven’t but as a blog dedicated to Afro’s/ style, I thought I’d give a recap of the fiercest afro’s making headlines this summer.

#3: First off, the new M.A.C. cosmetics campaign features a fierce perfect spiral do’ in their promotional ads aimed at the new line of colors also called the Style Warrior make up line. The bold hair really tied in the jungle animal theme they’ve got going but the spirals are a little too perfect for my taste.

#2: Second place goes to Ciara for her afro in her new music video for her current single, “Love Sex Magic” featuring Justin Timberlake. Ciara really stepped up the theatrics for this video with extravagant light set ups, leopard body suits, studded corsets and of course, the biggest attention grabbing ploy of all, Justin Timberlake himself.

Beyonce and her afro from her video for her latest single "Ego"

Beyonce and her afro from her video for her latest single "Ego"

#1: First place goes to my favorite gal Beyonce Knowles for her perfectly tamed afro in her recently released music video for her single “Ego.” Why does her afro take first prize? Well that’s because her afro is literally part of the act in her video. Yes it’s obviously not the main attraction in the video, but her afro still plays a vital part in her dance sequence. The video which was co-directed by Beyonce herself,  also has her lovely backup dancers wearing the same do.

Honorable Mentions go to: Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga graces the cover of Rolling Stone magazine in what some would consider an depoufed afro. Maybe it’s a stretch to consider her do for the cover “afro-worthy” but I commend Lady Gaga for continuing to pave her own trail with fashion/ style and hair.
