Neon obsession explained

I’m strangely mesmerized by neon colors these days. Everything I seem to pick out, fashion wise, has been highlighter green and yellow or fuchsia pink. Thankfully, it looks like I’m not the only one who’s amping up the shock value color-wise this season.

“I don’t know if nature-inspired florals are a really urban thing. So when you think about fall color in New York — and this is really my homage to New York; it’s a very New York show — you think of neon. I love just the pop of neon with all these neutrals,” said designer Michael Kors backstage during his Fall 2009 Ready to Wear collection.(via)

Kors, along with a few other designers such as Marc Jacobs and Narciso Rodriguez, featured exciting bright options to accompany black fall staples; basic tights and boots. Even Oscar de la Renta featured a wonderful fuschia dress accented by a large sloppy black hat.

Some are tossing the trend back to an 80’s inspired fashion environment that welcome neon nail polish and even acid wash jeans. Others are passing off the neon fad as a homage to the 80’s punk fashion artist, the late Steven Sprouse, for the neon/ graffiti punk inspiration. As the public becomes more and more comfortable with eccentric fashion thanks to artists like M.I.A. and fashion houses like House of Holland, neon is making the biggest comeback into popular culture in 20 years.

Personally, I’m so glad the floral romantic period is making its way out and the black and neon combination is taking over. Kors even incorporated the bold look as “day wear,” taking the neon palate into the work place and away from the night club, a concept that was first introduced by Sprouse as “Day-Glo.”

Mitzi! You would be so proud of me. I've acquired a ton of neon stuff from H&M (pink shorts, yellow shorts, purple shorts, blue pants, yellow dress shirt…) and I LOVE it.

God. Who could handle that floral romantic shit in the first place? Romance hasn’t been in since the turn of the century at best.

Oh, and you’ll be proud to hear that I’ve begun to wear color. Next stop: admission to parents of my liberalism fanaticism/atheism.
Or not.
